About Nimble Tots

Becky Dixon on ukeNimble Tots is a South East London based music and storytelling organisation, aimed at delivering high quality, creative and inclusive music, story and drama workshops for 0-5s and their parents and carers, founded by storyteller and cellist Becky Dixon. It grew out of the creative childcare organisation Nimble Arts, as Becky realised her interest lies mainly in working with Early Years children and their families, and the two sister companies now work closely together (and Becky still frequently pops up running Nimble Arts holiday club workshop for older children)

Becky is an experienced musician, storyteller, workshop leader, teacher and arts project manager. As well as running Nimble Tots, you can often find her telling stories at venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Horniman Museum. She has over five years experience running and managing learning and outreach projects for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Proms. She particularly enjoys playing experimental and folk music, and has a Masters in Contemporary Musicology from Goldsmiths, and her dipABRSM in cello performance. She’d agree that it’s hard to beat a bit of Bach sometimes! As a musician she has performed in venues across London alongside with composers including Christian Wolff and Tom Johnson as a member of the Post Quartet, and has regularly recorded and played live with a number of bands, currently playing with the Understudies.

In Autumn 2016, Becky is on maternity leave, following the birth of her second daughter, although she’ll probably pop up leading the odd session here and there! She’s also still available to run bespoke one-off storytelling sessions, and so do feel free to drop her a line about any special events! For this term, regular classes will be lead by her super-talented team of lovely Nimble Tots regulars! From January 2017 onwards we’ll be back running at full pelt

Mikey is very excited to be joining the Nimble Tots storytelling team. He has been playing the flute since the age of seven and has performed on streets and stages ever since, involved with his local theatre in his hometown of Hereford until he moved to London to study his degree in music at Goldsmiths College. Since graduating he has toured across the UK, Europe, US and Russia as one-man-band Bird Radio, using his voice, flutes, guitar, piano, loops and effects to tell stories and sing songs. He also collaborates with various bands and theatre companies. He began working with Birdsnest Theatre in 2012 as musician and actor and has toured with three of their highly successful shows for 0-5 year olds, their mums, dads and carers; WASH (teddy’s first wash in the washing machine), My Friend Mole (adventures with an imaginary friend) and Happy Harry’s Cafe (a stage adaptation of the book by Michael Rosen), for which Mikey was the composer, musical director and played Charlie the musical waiter. Mikey is also a writer of short stories for all ages and works at Goldsmiths College as an Associate Lecturer in the Education Department and Schools Outreach programme. Samantha Sutherland

Samantha’s first experience of working in early years music was when she started depping classes at the Blackheath Conservatoire, she ended up running them for 5 years! Since leaving the conservatoire, Samantha has set up Mamfy’s Music Time, a company which offers private instrument tuition and children’s parties. Samantha also works as an actress, most regularly as an actor-musician which sees her telling stories whilst playing music. Nimbletots is essentially actor-musicianship for kiddies! She runs her own theatre company http://www.doorajartheatre.com/ who make their own actor-musician work and deliver workshops to schools. Samantha loves dogs, halloumi cheese and board games.
